The Biblical Historical Jesus Christ

Welcome to Chapel 111 The Church's One Foundation Pilgrim Thanksgiving The Biblical Historical Jesus Christ

The Biblical Historical Jesus…or, A Case of Mistaken Identity!

The question of the truth regarding Jesus Christ has been a subject of much debate for over 2,000 years.  Some modern “scholars” even doubt that He actually existed, and a 2015 national poll in the United Kingdom concluded that 22% of British citizens do not believe Jesus ever lived.  While there is much recorded in the pages of Scriptures regarding Jesus Christ, His miracles and His teachings, there are also extra-Biblical confirmations of His life and position in history.

Luke 1:4 That thou mightiest know the certainty of those things wherein thou hast been instructed.

Alexander Hamilton, signer of the U.S. Constitution, said:

“I have carefully examined the evidences of the Christian religion, and if I were sitting as a juror upon its authenticity, I would unhesitatingly give my verdict in its favor.  I can prove its truth as clearly as any proposition ever submitted to the mind of man.  Jesus’ birth and overcoming death is an historic fact.  It is true.”

John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court wrote:

“I have long been of the opinion that the evidence of Christianity needs only to be examined to produce conviction in candid minds.”

There are multiple extra-Biblical, secular sources which confirm the existence of Jesus Christ:

Flavius Josephus, Jewish historian, in “Antiquities” (93 AD)

Twice mentioned Jesus, describing the execution of “James, the brother of Jesus who is called Messiah”, “a man who did surprising deeds and was condemned to be crucified by Pilate”

Pliny the Younger, Roman governor, (born 61 AD) wrote to Emperor Trajan:

“early Christians would sing hymns to Christ as to a god”

Suetonius, Roman historian (born 69 AD), wrote:

“Emperor Claudius had expelled Jews from Rome who were making constant disturbances at the instigation of Christos (Christ)”

Tacitus, the Roman Senator & historian, In “Annals of Imperial Rome” (116 AD):

Chronicling the burning of Rome in 64 AD, “Emperor Nero falsely blamed the persons commonly called Christians who were hated for their enormities.  Christos (Christ), the Founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius.”

The exact date of the birth of Jesus is not known, either from the Biblical record or from historical annals.  The December 25 date commonly attributed to it was not established until the 4th Century and must be rejected for a host of reasons.  Though ancient and modern history is seemingly measured by the approximate year of His birth, both in the traditional reckoning of BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini, the Year of our Lord), or in the modern designation BCE (Before the Current Era) and CE (Current Era), He was actually born prior to the death of King Herod the Great, who died in late 4 BC.  Jesus was probably born about 1-2 years prior to Herod’s death, given the order for the execution of all Hebrew babies born in Bethlehem under two years of age, as the Judean king jealously sought to eliminate the infant who was reportedly born King of the Jews.

It is often said that Jesus Christ can be found in every book of the Bible, as He is foretold by more than 350 Biblical prophecies in the Old Testament, and His ministry and teachings are summarized in the 4 Gospels and expounded in the other epistles of the New Testament.  While many would focus only on the birth of Jesus, it is necessary to evaluate His complete history in any consideration of His life and times.  There are at least 351 Old Testament prophecies

Professor Peter Stoner, chairman of the mathematics department at Pasadena College, analyzed the statistical probability of only 8 of the Old Testament prophecies regarding Messiah being fulfilled in the Person of Jesus Christ, noting that the mathematical likelihood of such an event would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000.  This 10 to the 17th power would be equivalent to dumping silver dollars more two feet thick over the entire land area of Texas, marking one of them, stirring them thoroughly, and then blindfolding a person with the instruction to find the marked coin!  With such a statistical impossibility for fulfillment of only 8 of the prophecies, it is inconceivable that mere chance could result in the singular outcome of 351 Messianic prophecies!  The fact that most of the prophetic references to Christ were inspired and written from 400 to 1,500 years before His birth refutes any modern notions that the application of their fulfillment was merely a revisionist attempt to apply them to Christ at a much later date.

If they acknowledge the historicity of Christ at all, many people would define Jesus as a mere man, a great teacher, a religious martyr, but, nevertheless, a created being.  They would prefer to keep Him as a baby in a manger without considering the full scope of His identity or accomplishments.  While it is significant to note the statistical impossibility of recognition of the true identity of Jesus Christ by luck or by chance, only the divine illumination of the Holy Spirit of God can convince one of His true identity as Immanuel (“God With Us”), the Savior of His people, the eternal King of kings and Lord of lords!  Many people know about Jesus Christ, but the key for eternity is to actually know Him personally!

Matthew 7:22-23 Many will say to Me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Thy Name, and in Thy Name have cast out devils, and in Thy Name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from Me, ye that work iniquity.
